The Foundation Stumbling Stones Municipality Oude IJsselstreek was established in 2020. A working group is investigating the fate of the Jewish inhabitants during the Second World War. They consult archives and have conversations with relatives around the world and with older residents.
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) is a project of the German artist Gunter Demnig. The project commemorates Jews, Sinti and Roma, homosexuals and Jehovahs Witnesses who were persecuted by the Nazis before and during World War II.
Stolpersteine are concrete blocks measuring 10 x 10 cm which are laid into the pavement in front of the last places of residence of the victims. Their names and fate are engraved into a brass plate on the top of each Stolperstein.
27 stumbling stones will be laid in Oude IJsselstreek. In August 2021 the first 18 stones were laid in Terborg.
